I am reblogging this post to include this stunning audio recording by Tim, from ‘Unforsenities. Tim is a great writer and friend, and his recording of Elephants in the Room gives it such depth and drama that the written words just don’t create. I was so grateful to receive his recording of my writing. Thank you Tim!

Elephants in the room
It seemed I was in the mood for reflections and dark dreams, whether I liked it or not. Some things you don’t get to choose.
I knew it by the way my thoughts were shifting in the shadows, taking form and approaching me while I was sleeping. Snipers at the window of my soul, following my spine with their menacing, ancient eyes. Gathering in the edges of the jungle, the corners of my mind.
As the thoughts approach, they are like elephants in the room, seen for the first time, defying their resume with a thundering stampede. I hear them through the mist of the past, the trumpeting like emergencies, the trampling that smells like dust and feels like sand in my mouth.
I’d always avoided elephants like that. Stalking them, keeping them out of rooms as best I can. Until you. You who has lips that do not care about dust or sand. Who lies on the ground with me amongst the rush and holds my hand.
…
Artwork: Henri Rousseau, ‘The Dream’
(And can you spot the elephant?).
Rachel, an exquisite image that encapsulates well-defined metaphors makes for one exceptional penning.

a stunning image you have chosen Rachel. some dreams can do that, not just evoke feelings but prompt us to explore deeper. I am intrigued by the trampling that feels like sand and smells like dust. I am not sure I can identify what dust smells like. your writing is so sensual and evocative.

Yes, some dreams feel so powerful, like they’ve been creeping up on us for some time before they are finally expressed. Lingering around the edges of our consciousness. I had the feeling that smelling dust would be suffocating, making breathing difficult. Thank you so for your lovely compliments.

I’m going to write a proper response to the absolute brilliance of this piece, when I can gather my jaw from the floor and my glue the pieces of my melted heart back together….. but for now I have to say that this line right here? —-> “Snipers at the window of my soul, following my spine with their menacing, ancient eyes.” I would get this line tattooed on my body and spend the rest of my life telling people that you were the one who wrote it. Because it’s that good. And that beautiful. ❤

Ok, well, now it’s me that needs time to collect myself from the lavishness of this praise. Writing something that resonates with you April, that makes me know that I’ve done something right. But for once, I’d like to have something that I can tolerate lasting for a long time. I hope you’ve been well?

As for me…. I am ok in the stretchy way that ‘ok’ can be used. I have also been really busy, I moved house recently and work has been crazy. I’m not great at juggling things truth be told, so I’ve struggled a bit. I haven’t been writing much lately either. It’s nice to catch up with you! Xoxox

I so understand you. Moving house is such a big deal and juggling a lot on your plate while trying to maintain positivity can be downright disheartening sometimes.
I am doing okay on a soul level, and that is the most important part. It’s my mind that sometimes struggles to catch up as I continue rewiring its paths. But we are getting there, my mind and I. I will be looking for a new place soon too, by June I must move out of where I am living currently and it is throwing me a bit into disarray emotionally, but I am sure that I will be able to find something that is perfect for me.
I’ve had some incredible new experiences this year that definitely deserve to be talked about but I think I’m still savoring keeping them private and close to my breast for now. So they’re definitely good things. It is always a pleasure talking with you, Rachel, so I accept your x’s and o’s and send them right back a thousandfold.

It sounds like you have a lot going on. If your heart and soul are straight and it’s your mind that needs to catch up, I think it’s better than the other way round? I don’t know. I guess, best case scenario is that they all line up. Whatever your new and private experiences are, I completely understand keeping them close to your breast… especially if your mind needs time to catch up. Sometimes it’s too much to hear other people’s opinions or thoughts on personal matters, supportive or not.
I hope you find somewhere perfect to move to. I have to say, I found the moving process incredibly stressful. But now that I’ve done it, that has eased so much and I wish I’d allowed myself to relax more about it. I’m actually loving the change, it’s been for the better.
More X’s and O’s. You’re such a comforting and wonderful presence Larisa xoxox

As usual, I’m blind to any elephants in the room, all I see is a beautiful bog/oasis full gorgeous lotuses, an equally gorgeous naked lady, and a full moon, today on full moon day…
wait…. I see it! It actually looks friendly… like a friend on the ground… as she extends her hand…
much love for you, and for your ever-gorgeous words and image-pairings. You’re a goddess. xoxoxo

Nadine!! Thank you for such lovely words, I enjoy searching for the artworks. I always do it after I’ve done the writing, and then wish I’d done it first. I see so many more avenues where I could draw on inspiration from the art. But by then usually the writing is too tightly woven to change.
I love your response to the elephant. That you first saw the beauty in the scenery, and then when you saw the elephant, you saw the best in it. You made her a friend extending a hand, instead of an unwelcome and unspoken about usurper. This is such a beautiful illustration of how your kind works Nadine. You see the beauty in most everything, and you are so adept at articulating it in ways that are magnificent.
I hope you are well my dear friend. Sending you a whole lot of love and hugs 💜💫😘 xoxoxo

My dear friend, you provided the beauty, all I did was see it… you’re such an amazing lovely person for seeing me that way. Muah. 😘
I do the same with images (find them after the writing), with a very rare exception now and then. On faster pieces (like on the poetry account) I will grab an image and that inspires me to change the end of the poem in some way, or a word here and there, but yes in general it’s the writing first and then the images. And definitely half the fun is finding them.
I’ve been thinking of you and hoping you are well also, what with the move and all. Hugs and love back you. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo 🤗🌈💜

Beautifully penned prose-poetry, Rachel. I like how you intermingle the worlds of reality and dreams, and the stampede of elephants filling our room as a well-found metaphor for our fears in life. I love everything and especially this:
“As the thoughts approach, they are like elephants in the room, seen for the first time, defying their resume with a thundering stampede.”

“You who has lips that do not care about dust or sand. Who lies on the ground with me amongst the rush and holds my hand.” I died reading this sentence.
The entire piece is so beautiful, so hunting, so you in some sense. Actually is not you. It sheds light only on one part of you. But all parts of your artistic being are mirific.
I am silent now.
And I follow you in your dreams….
And no matter the dream, feel safe and loved.

I started writing a response to you three days ago, but a local emergency pulled me away.
On the night of 3/15 – 3/16, two local 14 year olds ran away together. I joined forces with dozens of local community members to find them. They were spotted close by and the search was on. It’s rural here, farmland and woods. They were sighted a couple times late the last couple days, but they ducked into the woods and we couldn’t find them. They hid really well! They were picked up, cold and wet, but unharmed, by the New York State Police this morning, 3/19, at 8:20. It’s cold (low 30’s to mid 40’s and rainy). I think they’d had enough and came out to the road. A huge burden has been lifted from all our shoulders.
I’m collecting myself mentally for my next post. I’ll share some info, but not all.
As for your question, My family and I are well. We are coping with the changes that the Corona Virus is forcing upon us. We aren’t in a lock-down state, but businesses are being restricted and schools closed. All gathering are cancelled. Things are strange and I’m afraid they will get weirder still. Social distancing is the new thing.
We’re about as socially distanced as we can get, the only contagion we can share is a computer virus. I promise, I won’t kiss your computer! (Hint, that was a tiny teaser of the plot of a story I’m working on, you know, end of humanity stuff, darkly humorous. Hmmmmmm?)
I hope that you and yours are well and not suffering with the current world crisis.
Stay healthy, don’t kiss any strangers, and keep writing!
Thank you for your concern,

When I made a file of it on my computer, it wouldn’t allow me to put it in a comment for you. After bouncing around in the dust bin of my mind for a month, I figured out a way! I shared the file on my phone to my gmail, and it worked. I’m going to gmail it to you and hope it works as well. Usually when I read aloud, my eyes run ahead of my mouth and I jumble the words. Oh, Thank you, Rachel for reposting this! It was great! Wow! Tim has a radio voice! Love your imagination on this!! I’ve had to deal with that too and your descriptions are great!! Loved that it was an audio. I agree with you on being able to just listen to Tim reciting. It did make it come alive!!
Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!!

No worries, Rachel!! I’ve been there and done that too many times!! Yes, I so agree the perfect radio voice! I’m hoping he checks out doing narration for audio books!! I think I may try and tempt him into recording a poem or two!! Ha! Not sure I have the same pull as You! LOL
Hoping you have a wonderful Thursday, My Dear!!

I liked this piece a couple of days ago – or nights or whatever – but held back writing something as I had nothing to say beyond ‘ace’. But i wake early today to the shuffling of your elephants h(a)unting my sleep. I still don’t really know what to say of them, but before even re-searching out this brilliant piece from among the detritus I recalled at once their ‘trumpeting’ and ‘trampling’ – both of which you have rendered in a deft and majestic slow motion terror amid rising savannah sand (or something, something, something!) – so, on re reading, I have to say… ace!
Thank you, IM&O.

Nick! I must have had momentary lapse over the weekend and missed this. How dare I, how could I? When my elephants have been shuffling around and haunting you too. You make this cinematic and very visual with your words “deft and majestic slow motion terror amid rising savannah sand.” That is something something Nick. In fact, that is ace! ❤️ xo

This pachyderm is happy to be back in the IM&O room – just dozing, causing only little trouble xo

And by that last comment I just meant it was beautiful as it was, is all. And also differently beautiful with Tim’s voice. 😍 There. I will finally hush up, now that my foot is tucked firmly in my mouth. ;)) Happy dreams, dear friend. :))) And please… write on. <333 💛🌻🙏🌿

I’m having a little bit of an argument with my reader, so I think it’s getting it’s own back and not posting my comments when I want it to, so you’ll probably get this comment twice! But I just had to say, Wow, that was wonderful!

Sometimes WP feels like it has a mind of its own. On this occasion it worked in my favour as I got to get these words twice.
Thank you!

“Snipers at the window of my soul, following my spine with their menacing, ancient eyes”
Rachel, dark dreams are certainly something one does not get to choose… How hauntingly you described the ancient quality of dreams in this piece – a different, ancient dimension…known in some level to the soul to be real… “mist of the past”. I love reading your posts because of their depth and gentle power to immerse and engage.

Dreams can haunt Isha, through that mist of the past. The ones that get right at our core, that we carry in our souls and our psyches. Your comment touches me deeply, for you saw the soul of the poem. Thank you.
Also, I keep meaning to tell you, I adore the name Isha ❤️.

Believe me, I get that – haunting dreams… I love how you talk about the soul of the poem, Rachel – poetic and endearing. Indeed, poetry does have soul.
I’m smiling at this sweet compliment! Thank you, Rachel. 😘❤️
