I know these melancholy mornings well
yet they don’t even know themselves
from afternoons or evenings
Their presence is distinguished
by a lack
of distinguishing features,
They are faceless, anaemic
eyes white with meaningless lies
like the weather is ‘fine’
(it isn’t ,
and neither are they) –
Those days sigh,
and their sympathies lie with
a book whose pages were never turned,
lost
beside dregs of leftover dreams
and a half empty cup of coffee
On these melancholy mornings
it feels like there is nothing left
except for the singular rose outside the window
I stare at it, bereft
and wish it to bloom
and as if in slow motion
morning becomes afternoon

My dearest Rachel, this is sublime. Morning becomes afternoon morphed in melancholy. The weather, the coffee, and the book are silent witnesses to this transformation.
Hope: a rose, a portal to love
“except for the singular rose outside the window
I stare at it, bereft
and wish it to bloom”
Yet…
You are a sublime writer. You fantastic words became melancholy. How many of us felt like this but we could not express it like this? You are fabulous. You are a magnificent writer.
Love and hugs to you Rachel.

Thank you, for being your fabulous self. Honestly, I can’t even express what your support means to me.
Thank you, always. Love and hugs back 😘

I hear you on those melancholic mornings. This poem’s companionship brings me a bit of sun. :)) I loved this line:
“eyes white with meaningless lies (such an image it generates!)
followed by:
“like the weather is ‘fine’
(it isn’t ,
and neither are they)”
Nice way to show and then tell the ways many of us try to preserve harmony in society… while sometimes aching inside.
Hugs, dear friend. From a now-chirpy sunrise, on the other side of the globe. 💖🌅

I can nearly hear the chirps from your sunrise, so your words cheer me. Just like the companionship you described. I’m glad you like the line about the lies -the ubiquitous euphemism of “I’m fine…”. I think it’s so symptomatic of many things… (and I’m so guilty of it).
Thank you always dear friend ❤️

I can relate to this piece. Day merges into another, and I’m still staring with a cigarette in my mouth, watching people pass underneath my balcony, and waiting for the petrichor. There’s a half empty cup of coffee in my hand too. This is very well expressed Rachel. And it’s extremely hard to express ennui.

In a poem like this, I’m never sure whether to be happy or saddened when people relate. With you… I’m going to go ahead and take it as a compliment, I see that you share in this ennui I refer to, cup of coffee in hand, both. I think you do an incredible job of expressing ennui in your writing.

“like the weather is ‘fine’
(it isn’t ,
and neither are they) –”
From the image accompanying the verse, to the images of the book, the half empty cup of coffee, dregs of leftover dreams (so enchanting), and of course the splash of red with that rose…this poem is impactful and gorgeously pleasing to the senses… The entire piece sounds like a fragment of the subconscious, with each phrase melding into another like colours meshed in a palette by an artist who knows their way around the artform so well, that the art they finally create is so novel, so piquant, so picturesque and so profound that the beholder can only stand entranced, moved and gawk at it, awe inspired… Words won’t do justice, here Rachel. True emotion is beyond expression…and true expression is beyond earthly words. If I could reach out and hug you, I would. ❤️

Isha, I keep reading and rereading your comment. I really felt like you read this with your heart, you, who is an incredible writer, and who I feel knows exactly that feeling I try to express in this poem. That is a double edged kind of component, and you have touched me beyond words. You’re right, true emotion is beyond expression…. You are an absolute sweetheart and I can’t tell you how much I value your opinions and thoughts. Thank you, I felt that hug, and I hope you can feel the one I send you too ❤️

I felt the hug through the poem itself..cosmically connected indeed. I saved it, and re read a couple of times more and each time it felt like I discovered a new aspect, familiar and poetic, reassuring in the knowledge of its reach, however cruel that may sound…it can be difficult living through something that seems inexplicable… Art like this comes at a great cost, sometimes I wonder if it is worth it… No one should have to feel that.
Also, your voice is beautiful! Absolutely loved the way you spoke each word ❤❤

I don’t know how you do it, but you see things in a way that claws at the emotions in me, and I feel like you know every subtlety and nuance within it. I can’t thank you in a way that’s adequate. I feel like I inhabit a universe you understand. Which is comforting and at the same time saddening as I wouldn’t want anyone to know what I mean through personal experience. You’re a kindred spirit Isha, I know it ❤️

I will always remember this… Thank you sweet poetess! ❤️ I truly believe, Rachel, that we cross paths with kindred spirits, and members of our soul tribe especially when we’re engaged in our life’s work, an artistic endeavour or anything done with faith and passion, so this is no mere coincidence. It was bound to happen and we were bound to connect.

This is graphic, and sets a scene. A scene of deprivation, and loss of gain. True to life these melancholy mornings, and that singular rose that perches lifelessly on the ledges of windowsills, swaying in the embracing arms of the wind, making you question its constancy and consistency. Amazing, amazing piece.

Beautifully expressed. Your words capture the emotions and both slowly wrap around the reader. I enjoyed reading it and felt very familiar there. Then, I played your audio recording and it added a whole other dimension to hear it directly from you, instead of from my point of view in my mind. I like to read, but I’ll have to also listen from now on. Thank you for sharing. I’m now visualizing the rose blooming and surprising someone, on some lovely day.
